How to do sublimation on handphone casings?

Sublimation blank mobile phone case consists of two parts – a plastic case with self-adhesive strip and an aluminium sheet that is coated with sublimation coating on one of the sides.

Here is our guide for printing your design on a blank sublimation phone case:

  1. Print out your design onto a sublimation paper using sublimations ink. Remember to print the image as a ‘Mirror Image’.
  2. Remove the thin plastic protective film that is on the aluminium sheet. If you do not remove this, the resulting print will be blurry or have colours bleeding into each other, your plastic film will melt too.
  3. Using heat resistant tape, stick the sublimation-coated side of the aluminium sheet to the printed sublimation paper.

Note: Before proceeding please see whether you have a Pearl or Gloss finish insert for your cases as the pressing settings are slightly different for each.

4. Set the pressing temperature of your press to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit) and once the press is ready, place a piece of blank white paper on the press. Place sublimation paper side on top, aluminium sheet below. Cover with a Teflon sheet on top.

5. For Pearl finish inserts set the timer for 60-70 seconds and for Gloss finish inserts use 110-120 seconds.

6. Once the heat press has finished its countdown, wear gloves to remove the aluminium sheet. Quickly separate the sublimation paper from aluminium is hot. This will help to stop the printing process and prevent any smudges or blurring.

7. Cool the sheet by leaving it aside for 10-15 minutes or put in a pail of water.

8. Remove the self-adhesive strip from the plastic or rubber phone case.

9. Carefully place the aluminium metal sheet into the case. For best results start from the corner where the camera hole is situation and then line up the rest of the edges.

10. Press firmly along the edges and the middle of the insert and case to create a strong fix. If you like you can also add a small amount of superglue before affixing to increase the bond.
